"Rejoice greatly, oh daughter of Zion Shout oh daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your King is coming to you. He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."  Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
For those who know the story which was quoted in the Old Testament book of Zechariah, and fulfilled in the New Testament when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey a few days before the Passover that was observed by the Jews.
Notice that He rode on a "colt the foal of a donkey." A donkey is used as a beast of burden. In other words, to carry goods, as they still do in many parts of the world.

Jesus did this to signify that He was not coming as a man of war, like would be on a horse, but on a lowly donkey, to signify His intended bearing of our burdens, and sins upon the cross. How wonderful, when we realize that we do not need to carry our own burdens or cares of guilt, whatever else may be burdening us.
When we come to accept His bearing of our burdens and sins upon the cross, we experience a new life in Him, because He arose from the grave three days later, triumphant over death.
